In the early 20th century, Hollywood was a sleepy suburb of Los Angeles with a few movie studios and a handful of stars. But as the film industry exploded in popularity, Hollywood became synonymous with the glitz and glamour of the movies.
In 1923, a group of Hollywoodland real estate developers decided to build a giant sign to promote their new housing development. The sign was to be 50 feet tall and stretch 400 feet across the hillside. It would be made of wood and spelled out "Hollywoodland" in giant letters.

Hollywood or Hollywoodlan
The sign was erected in just a few months and quickly became an iconic landmark. It was visible for miles around and served as a symbol of Hollywood's growing influence.
But over the years, the sign began to deteriorate. The wood rotted and the letters faded. By the 1940s, the sign was in serious disrepair and the "land" had been removed from the end of the name.

Old Hollywood words
That's when a group of Hollywood celebrities, including Alice Cooper, Hugh Hefner, and Gene Autry, stepped in to save the sign. They formed the Hollywood Sign Trust and raised money to rebuild the sign using concrete and steel.
The new sign was unveiled in 1978 and quickly became an even more popular landmark than the original. Today, the Hollywood sign is known around the world as a symbol of the movie industry and the glamour of Hollywood.
But the story of the sign's creation is just one small part of the larger history of Hollywood. The sign is a reminder of the industry's humble beginnings and its transformation into one of the most powerful cultural forces in the world.
